Inspiration comes often and from the most unexpected places. You just have to keep your eyes open and ear to the ground. The best part of my job everyday is I get to watch films. I try and glean influence from most media I am exposed too.
Docs from Startup.com to Genghis Blues, American Movie, Trekkies, Buck, Grizzly Man, Young At Heart, Dogtown and ZBoys, Buena Vista Social Club. Most recently The Happy Movie, Jiro Dreams In Sushi and The Art Of Rap. Gasland, Hoop Dreams, Craiglist Joe, Ken Burns Baseball, Senna, Spirit of the Marathon, Man On A Wire, The Garden, Bastards Of The Party and of course The UP series.
So much to see, understand, interpret, redirect. Use.
I am bursting to both work on STILL as its director as well as experience the film as a future viewer. The heart of the this film will be the people, who they are, where they are from and how they live. The challenge in making any film is engaging the audience. How do you get them into a theater seat or to press play? How do you keep them there, motivate them to remain til the end. Beyond that, with a subject matter such as baby loss, can we entertain as well as educate? If this is a story of life then I am sure we most certainly can. Even within the darkest of hour experiences there is humor, levity. Always respect, reverence and honor, colorful none the less.
This world has sharp edges. We can’t wrap it in bubble wrap. If we could, we might be spared from the imperfections that cause to hurt but we also would lose warmest sense of human interaction and existence. So, we march on. Our eyes are open and listening. We are inspired by your babies and families and we are ready to share them with this world.
